About the project

The project to design an MVP (minimum viable product) for wellness services in the tourism sector was carried out in an entrepreneurship context. This project was part of an entrepreneurship bootcamp organized by 101 Amazonas (an incubator and accelerator of startups or early-stage ventures located in Peru.

About the challenge

The main challenge was to design a minumum viable prototype to be presented to a panel of judges to enter the incubation phase. In addition to the design, other important challenges were presented as part of the main challenge such as:

  • Brand and concept creation.
  • User, stakeholders and market research.
  • Define and design according to research.
  • Analysis and feedback from the jury and users.

This challenge was conceived to promote conscious and wellness tourism in LATAM.

Research stage

Initially, we considered where to direct our efforts for research, considering the services were aimed at the tourism and wellness sector. Thus, we proposed 3 research axes as follows:

  • Market and industry research.
  • Tourist user research.
  • Research on professional offering wellness retreats or touristic plans.

In the market research, we found various sources where people acquire these type of services, especially through the traditional methods (agencies) but overall via online. We reviewed services, models and value propositions of agencies and online services.

In general, we found that many focus on experiential tourism, but few on wellness tourism.

On the other hand, we realized that those offering wellness services are more related to retreats or therapeutic trainings. We also noticed that these service offerings were very general and broad. For this reason, we decided to choose the following approach:

  • Focus on retreat services
  • Focus only on one area of wellness.

For the user research, we conducted surveys with a group of 10-15 people regarding their perception of tourism and wellness. We wanted to understand what they thought and felt about their tourist experiences.

Some of the survey results were:

  • Tourists mostly travel to scape or break away from their usual reality.
  • Many plan their trips, but there is a high percentage that improvises their travels.
  • Retreats for wellness are not prioritized among the reasons for travel.
  • Generally, they travel for vacation, family, business and enjoyment purposes.
  • Many enjoy contact with nature, but is not their first choice.
  • Ultimately, people seek well-being even if they do not consciously recognize it.

Those were some insights from the many we gathered.

We realized there was a lot of untapped potential in the wellness sector and decided to focus our efforts on choosing a niche that was not widely offered. For this and other fundamental reasons , we chose the niche of retreats with dance and nature. Thus, we interviewed a faciilitator on the subject.

From the interview with the facilitator, we were able to identify the following needs:

  • Need to promote her retreats and wellness culture.
  • Limited experience with technology and marketing.
  • Support connecting and communicating with new clients.
  • Need for ease in retreat management and payments.

Based on the research, we established project objectives aligned with user, stakeholders (retreat facilitator) needs and market.

Project goals

Based on the information gathered during the research stage, it was decided to establish the following objectives:

  • Create branding (logo, concept, representative colours etc).
  • Create wireframes, user flows and prototypes based on the organized information (user journey, stories and brainstorming sessions for users and retreat hosts)
  • Create prototype to present to the jury.
  • Receive feedback to establish next steps.

Also, we can find right below some goals based on the project itself.

Ideate and creation phase

For the creation of the brand, we drew a lot of inspiration from nature and also from the main sense or purpose of the user and stakeholder. The logo was inspired by the momoto cejiazul bird , for its beauty and natural flying nature.

The selected name was Biojar in relation to travelling and connection with everything around us. Hence, the bio foundation.

Also, we can see the sitemap of the project.

Subsequently, we created some user flows and wireframes to define and iterate.

Prototype

We also created a video prototype showing up the overall overview and interaction of the UI design.

After presenting the prototype to the judges, we learned that we were on the right track. However, the recommendation was to make it a bit simpler to focus more on the operational part.

Thank you so much for your attention.🙌.

Final design

Based on the wireframes presented and applying a simple style guide, we ended up with some high fidelity UI screens as follows.
